Getting Started with CAT

What are the next steps after downloading and installing CAT?

Firstly, we recommend that you acquaint yourself with the content of the user guide that is installed along with the application and accessible through the specified program group in the Start menu.

Next, launch CAT and click the Visualization button on the start-up screen to open the Visualization Centre in your browser. Then click on the sample analysis provided and explore the different dimensions of the associated model, namely topics, documents and words. Also try using the Visualization Centre interface to open a few of the analyzed documents, look up the meaning of certain words on Google and to do a search. Once you are comfortable with navigating the results of an analysis in the Visualization Centre, try to do an analysis of your own.

Firstly, gather a few files containing extractable text (twenty or more is recommended, but the number actually depends on the number of words in the documents and not on the number of documents alone). We recommend using documents in pdf or txt format although most Microsoft Office file types are supported. Note that if you are using pdf files, please ensure that you have Adobe Reader 9+ installed to ensure successful text extraction.

Now click the New Analysis button on the CAT start-up screen to setup your analysis. Provide a descriptive name for the analysis in the Analysis Name box, then click the Add Folder button to select the one or more folders containing the documents to analyse. Next, specify the number of topics you would like CAT to formulate based on the contents of the documents you specified. For a start, leave the Minimum Frequency value at the default value of 5. Lastly, select the stoplist corresponding to the language the specified documents are written in to eliminate commons words from the analysis (e.g. select the English stoplist if the documents are written in English to eliminate words like "and", "or", "therefore", etc.). Click the Start Analysis button to initiate the analysis and wait until the analysis has been completed (this may take anything from a few minutes to several hours depending on the capabilities of your PC, the number of documents, the number of words in the documents, the number of topics specified, etc.)

Once the analysis has been completed, open the Visualization Centre and click on the name of your analysis to explore the results.
